WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier baseball first baseman Griffen Duenkler and women's soccer forward Genevieve Morgan have been named the Laurier Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 6, 2026.
A third-year first baseman from Mississauga, Ont., Duenkler powered the Golden Hawks' offense as Laurier opened its 2026 OUA baseball season with a pair of doubleheaders against Brock and Guelph.
Over four games, Duenkler went 8-for-14 at the plate for a .571 batting average while posting a .714 slugging percentage and a 1.286 OPS. His eight hits included six singles and two doubles, while he also drove in five runs and scored twice as the Golden Hawks earned their first victory of the season.
On the women's soccer pitch, Morgan recorded three goals and an assist in a weekend sweep of the Algoma Thunderbirds.
The Kitchener, Ont., native and health sciences major scored twice on Saturday, netting the opening goal and the eventual game winner in Laurier's 5-1 victory. The pair of goals were the first two OUA markers of her career.
Morgan carried that momentum into Sunday's rematch, once again opening the scoring before setting up Taya Johnson's eventual game winner as the Hawks secured a second 5-1 victory. Her contributions helped Laurier claim the maximum six points available from the weekend series.
It marks the first Laurier Athlete of the Week honour for both Duenkler and Morgan.
