WATERLOO, Ont. -Â Laurier men's golfer Matthew Whitehead and women's lacrosse attacker Tori Nascimento have been named the Laurier Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 13, 2026.
A fifth-year kinesiology and physical education major from Cambridge, Ont., Whitehead paced the Golden Hawks at the Guelph Fall Kickoff held at Guelph Lakes Golf and Country Club, firing a two-under-par 69 to finish in a four-way tie for third on the individual leaderboard.
The two-time OUA all-star helped the defending OUA champion Golden Hawks post a team score of 292, good for third place overall. Laurier finished six strokes behind the tournament-winning Brock Badgers and four shots back of the host Waterloo Warriors.
Whitehead's performance marks a strong start to his final OUA campaign and earns him the first Laurier Athlete of the Week honour of the 2026-27 season.
On the lacrosse field, Nascimento continued her dominant offensive play, recording 13 goals and nine assists across two victories as the Golden Hawks opened their 2026 campaign.
The veteran attacker began the weekend with five goals and four assists in Laurier's season-opening win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.
Nascimento followed that effort with an even bigger performance against the Toronto Varsity Blues, tallying eight goals and five assists while adding two forced turnovers and one loose-ball draw. Her 13-point outing helped Laurier remain unbeaten through its opening weekend.
The award marks the first Laurier Athlete of the Week honour for Whitehead and the second career Athlete of the Week selection for Nascimento.
