A new home for student recreation & wellness, fit to be called Golden.

Wilfrid Laurier University’s Seagram Drive Athletics & Recreation facility (University Stadium) holds a special place in the heart of Waterloo. It’s a space where Laurier students, alumni and community come together to demonstrate athletic excellence, to foster wellness and to build community vibrance.

Built in 1957, University Stadium has been home to many historic moments over its 66+ years.

However, the facility is now in need of serious repair. Age and significant use have taken its toll on the complex’s seating area, field and structure. Currently, due to the critical repairs needed, the stadium’s usage is dramatically impeded.

Subject to further Board of Governors approval and donor support, Laurier is planning for a phased redevelopment of University Stadium and enhancements to provide top-level recreational and wellness facilities.

To date, the Seagram Drive Athletics & Recreation Project has:

  • Removed the original grandstand seating
  • Replaced the turf
  • Installed a new LED videoboard scoreboard
  • Replaced the field lighting
  • Constructed new stands for up to 3,000 fans (with capacity increasing to 5,000 with standing room)
  • Added the Dome to support winter field use

Future phases of the project will focus on the adjacent building and remain subject to further funding and governance approvals. Architectural planning for that space is underway.

A vision for the future home of Athletics, Recreation and Wellness

More space for students to unwind

With busy schedules balancing academics, athletics, and work, students need time and space to unwind. In the vision for the revitalized facility, we have included substantial lounge space where all students can take time to recharge while on campus.

The next era of Laurier Athletics & Recreation, through the renovated facility, will be a centralized place for health and wellness where students, staff and the wider community can come together.

With the addition of a winter-use dome, the Laurier community will immediately gain access to over 76,000 square feet of recreation space and over 1,500 hours of field time.

Currently, winter use space is limited to gymnasiums, leaving field activities to travel off campus.

The winterized dome opened on February 1, 2026.

The Dome at University Stadium was officially opened on January 27, 2026 in a special event. Programming in the space begins February 1, 2026.

A space to pursue excellence

Laurier Athletics & Recreation contributes significantly to the high-performance sport system within Ontario and Canada.

Subject to further Board of Governors approval and donor support, a proposed new high-performance program will set up Laurier varsity teams to compete for more championships and see more success through access to:

  •  Enhanced strength and conditioning programs and coaches.
  • Training facilities.
  • Enhanced services with sport medicine and sport psychology.
  • Community engagement opportunities.
  • Opportunities to build skills through internship programs.
