LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Two more wins at the U SPORTS/Curling Canada University Championship on Wednesday not only kept Laurier men's curling's undefeated record intact but also secured a spot in the semifinal playoff round.
In the day's opening draw against the Brock Badgers, the Golden Hawks stormed back with four unanswered points after the fourth-end break for a 6-3 come-from-behind victory.
Much like Laurier's women's team, the Golden Hawks men's rink had a chance at redemption in a rematch of this year's OUA final against Carleton for the evening draw.
After finding themselves down again at the game's midway point, Laurier regrouped to post four of the next five points to win 6-5.
The result was extra sweet for the fact that it clinched a spot in Friday's semifinal.
"We knew it would be a really good game tonight and we just gave it our all," Laurier skip
Kibo Mulima said after the late game. "It was a grind. We had to come from behind a little but we made a lot of shots late and just stuck with it, so I think perseverance is what got us the win."
With still two games left in pool play against Calgary (3-2) and Memorial (3-2), there's still final positioning - plus hammer and colour selection through the final that comes with it - to focus on.
Â
For Mulima and the Golden Hawks, they know they need to "just stick to our process" to put themselves in the best position possible.Â
"I'll credit our coach (
Matt Wilkinson) for just really setting us up well, that once we're here we've got the time and the resources to really just go back, and if there's anything we need to talk about, we'll figure it out so that we can keep improving from one game to the next," Mulima said.
The fact that they've joined their women counterparts in the final four wasn't lost on the team either.
"It's a really exciting time for Laurier curling. It's awesome that we've been able to come out and cheer each other on and kind of take this trip together," Mulima said. "We're always texting after each game, like '"Great win", "Great stuff", "Keep it going,", so yeah, really cool."
