LETHBRIDGE, Ont. - Laurier's men's curling team outscored its opponents 22-6 in two victories on the second day of the U SPORTS/Curling Canada University Championships in Lethbridge.Â
The biggest test came with their first draw on Tuesday going up against the Canada West champion Regina Cougars.
Laurier put two on the board in the first and third ends before adding a single in the fifth to build a 5-1 lead.
The Cougars stormed back though in the sixth, with three of their own to cut the deficit to just one.
Laurier's rink, led by skip
Kibo Mulima and including
Wyatt Small,
Wyatt Wright,
Nathan Kim, and
Adam Moor, shook it off and responded with a four-point seventh, which led to the teams shaking hands as Laurier won it 9-4.
"We started well, keeping control of the game, good first half," said Mulima after the game. "We had a few miscues in the sixth end. Just got caught with the ice more than anything, some spots we hadn't seen. But we limited the damage and played a really good seventh, so it was good resilience and I like the way the team's feeling."
Having passed that test seemed to give the Golden Hawks an extra jolt in their evening draw against the host Lethbridge Pronghorns.Â
Laurier were up 6-0 before the game was three ends old and would post seven more points (thanks to a fiver in the fifth) in coasting to a 13-2 win in six ends.
Holding a 3-0 record, Laurier and the Calgary Dino's sit tied atop the standings as the only undefeated teams remaining.Â
According to Mulima, the strong start can be attributed to the experiences the team gained in their run to the OUA Championship final before ultimately coming just short of a fifth straight provincial title.
"We went through a lot of experiences as a team and there was a lot of resilience, so that was good to see," said Mulima.Â
"I think we've really taken that momentum from OUA's into our past couple weeks of training and I feel really good with how we're coming into this week. We just need to keep doing the simple things well and that's what's going to be key for us to stay ready for every game."
Laurier will turn its attention to a pair of teams they're very familiar with, as they face the OUA bronze medalist Brock Badgers (1-2) to start Wednesday (2:30pm EST) before taking on Carleton (2-1) at 10:30 pm EST, who they lost to in the aforementioned OUA final just over two weeks ago.Â
