Laurier fall short of fifth straight OUA title but still qualify for nationals

CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - Laurier's drive for five stalled on Sunday, as the Golden Hawks men's curling team had its bid to extend the already unprecedented consecutive streak of OUA titles end on Sunday afternoon.

Instead, it was the Carleton Ravens, after scoring three in the sixth end, who went on to an 8-5 win in the gold medal draw of the 2025 OUA Men's Curling Championship at the Galt Country Club.

The podium result was no easy feat for the Golden Hawks, who came into the conference championship as four-time defending champions but with only two exhibition bonspiels played this season.

Despite the lack of games as a group heading into provincials, the purple and gold still came away as the winner of Pool A after going 3-1. The only blemish on their record: a 6-4 loss to the Ravens in Friday's afternoon draw.

After winning their final two draws of pool play quite handily by 10-3 scores over McMaster and Windsor, the Golden Hawks needed an extra end in each of its first two elimination games to advance.

First came a nine-end win, 4-3, over the Queen's Gaels in the quarterfinals.

That was followed by another extra end  win over Brock, 8-7, which secured at least a top-three finish and a spot at the 2025 U SPORTS/Curling Canada University Championships in Lethbridge, AB.

In the final against Carleton, Laurier built up a 5-3 lead heading into the fourth-end break, but the Ravens reeled off five unanswered points after that to secure their program's second OUA men's curling title and first since 2019.

The Laurier rink, skipped by Kibo Mulima, had its vice Wyatt Small named an OUA second team all-star at the conclusion of the tournament.

Both the Golden Hawks women's and men's teams will now head to western Canada to compete at nationals from February 24-28.
