LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Both Laurier curling rinks won their opening draws on Monday at the U SPORTS/Curling Canads University Championships at the Lethbridge Curling Club.
The Golden Hawks women's team was the first to hit the ice to take on the Canada West silver-medalist Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.
Laurier, the OUA silver medalists, picked up a single in the second end and stole three points in the third to build a 4-0 lead.
After a double in the sixth and another steal in the seventh, they wrapped up a 7-2 win.
Next up for the Golden Hawks are the Guelph Gryphons (0-1) at 10:30am EST and Regina Cougars (1-0)) at 6:30pm EST.
On the men's side, the Golden Hawks found themselves in a back-and-forth battle against the University of New Brunswick Reds - fellow silver medalists representing the AUS.
A five-point seventh end was the difference though as it broke a 5-5 deadlock and helped the Golden Hawks secure a 10-5 win.
Laurier will now face Regina (0-1) at 2:30pm EST and host Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-1) at 10:30pm EST on Tuesday.
