HAMILTON, Ont. – Laurier's women's golf team made it back-to-back podium finishes on Monday – albeit one step higher – after winning team gold at the McMaster Invitational in Hamilton.
It was the second consecutive tournament in which a Golden Hawk came away with an individual medal too, with third-year student-athlete
Vanessa Lin finishing first.
Laurier's men's golf team also secured its first hardware of the season with a bronze medal.Â
The Golden Hawks women's team consisting of Lin,
Kristi Godkin,
Lauren Bevan, and
Sam Zulian combined for a shot total of 240 – easily beating second-place Toronto by seven shots. This came after starting their season with a team silver medal finish three days ago in London at the Western Invitational.
Lin finished the one-round event with a +4 (77) to win the individual title while Godkin (+8, 81) and Bevan (+9, 82) finished in fifth and in a tie for sixth, respectively.
Last year at the same event, the team finished third while Lin was second, individually.
On the men's side,
Julian Crupi and team captain
Jonathan Cramton both shot +2 (74) to lead the squad, which included
Aaron Petro,
Sean Tippin, and
Conor Gaudet. Back in the clubhouse, the team's total of 308 was just one shot shy of second-place finishers (and host) McMaster.
Laurier golf head coach
Jeff Colley shared how a solid 2021 season and strong group of returning student-athletes didn't make him the least bit surprised about the team's early success, especially on the women's side.
"The women seem determined this year to make a strong push to medal at each event and win the OUA Championship this season," said Colley.
The Golden Hawks will be back on the course this Sunday, September 25 at the Brock Invitational, hosted by the Sawmill Golf Course in Fenwick. Laurier's men's team are defending champions while the women won silver a year ago.Â
