OTTAWA, Ont. – It was déjà vu for Laurier's men's golf team as it secured a silver medal at the OUA Golf Championships for the second straight year.
Sunday's finish at the Hylands Golf Club in Ottawa, Ont. was the second year in a row the team came away as runners-up at the Championships, having also won a silver medal in 2021 at Cherry Downs in Pickering.
Leading the way was fifth-year student-athlete
Jonathan Cramton, who carded a final score of +2 (146) for the two-day event to earn an individual silver medal. Despite very cold and windy conditions, the communications studies major from Toronto, Ont. still totalled four birdies, 26 pars, and just six bogeys over the 36 holes.Â
Teammate
Matthew Whitehead moved up eight spots on the final day to finish fifth (+5, 149) while
Conor Gaudet (+9, 153),
Aaron Petro (+11, 155), and
Julian Crupi (+19, 163) rounded out the group.
The team's result also extends Laurier's string of success at the OUA Championships, having medaled in each of the past four seasons. With the 2020 season cancelled due to COVID, they also finished first in 2019 and third in 2018.Â
For the 2022 season, the team captured gold at the Brock and UW/WLU Invitationals along with bronze at the McMaster and Windsor Invitationals.
Having qualified for the Canadian University/College Championships in the spring of 2023, the team will now await their opportunity to improve on their sixth-place finish at nationals last season.
Laurier's women's team shone on the big stage as well, finishing fifth at the OUA Championships to match their best-ever team result – which occurred in 2019. As a collective, the team of
Vanessa Lin,
Lauren Bevan,
Sam Zulian, and
Kristi Godkin finished with a combined score of +74 (506) - just four shots outside of the top three.
Despite not coming home with a medal, the team accumulated an impressive collection of hardware throughout the season - having medaled in every tournament on the schedule: gold at the McMaster, Brock, and Windsor Invitationals, silver at the Western Invitational, and bronze at the Waterloo Invitational.
Lin also won a pair of individual gold during the campaign while Bevan came away with an individual silver medal.
