Laurier mourns loss of winningest men's basketball head coach, Peter Campbell

WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier Athletics and Recreation is mourning the loss of former Golden Hawks men's basketball head coach Peter Campbell, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15at Hospice Waterloo Region at the age of 79.

Beloved husband of Jackie for 42 years, Campbell was a loving father to John (Dianne Norman), Paul and Jamie.

"We are deeply saddened by Peter's passing, a coach whose impact reached far beyond the court," said Ryan Lannan, Laurier's incoming director of athletics. "His dedication, wisdom, and passion transformed our men's basketball program and enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to work with him. The Golden Hawk family is profoundly grateful for his leadership and legacy, and we send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Jackie, his children, grandchildren and everyone who had the fortunate pleasure to have known Peter."

"Our community is hit hard by the loss of Coach Campbell," said Cavell Johnson, Laurier's manager of men's basketball operations and head coach. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this time of grief. I pray they are surrounded by the love and support needed right now - the same love and energy that Peter poured over those around him. The impact he had - and light he shone - on the Golden Hawk basketball program, athletic department, and community will forever be felt. Coach Campbell was a straight shooter with a heart of gold. His physical presence will be missed, and his legacy will be celebrated."

Campbell, the ninth head coach in program history, retired following the 2015-16 season after a 34-year coaching career in U SPORTS, formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). He spent 16 seasons leading the Golden Hawks and remains the program's all-time winningest coach with 155 victories in 339 regular-season games.

Campbell was inducted into the Golden Hawks Hall of Fame in 2020.

He arrived in Waterloo at a time when the program had struggled to replicate the success of its early championship era. Under his leadership, Laurier qualified for the playoffs in 14 consecutive seasons, re-establishing a competitive standard within the Ontario University Athletics conference.

Campbell made an immediate impact. In his second season (2001-02), he guided a turnaround from two wins to 12 and was named OUA West coach of the year.

By 2005-06, with a veteran core developed from his early recruiting classes, Campbell led Laurier to its first national championship appearance in 28 years. The Golden Hawks qualified for the CIS championship in Halifax and finished ninth.

Known for an up-tempo style of play, Campbell also coached four of the top five all-time leading scorers in program history, including Kale Harrison, a CIS all-Canadian in 2010-11. Two years later, Max Allin led the country in scoring and was named a CIS all-Canadian.

Prior to Laurier, Campbell spent 15 seasons with the Laurentian Voyageurs, winning Wilson Cup titles in 1998 and 2000. He was a six-time OUA East coach of the year and led Laurentian to six national championship appearances.

Campbell remains one of only two coaches in Canadian basketball history to be named both CIS and Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association coach of the year. He earned CIS honours in 1996-97 after previously receiving the CCAA award in 1983 while coaching women's basketball at Fanshawe College.

He also contributed extensively to Canada's national team programs. Campbell won bronze medals as an assistant coach with the senior women's team at the 1986 World Championship and with the men's cadet team at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship. His international résumé also included roles with Canada's U21 and U18 teams, six appearances at the FISU Summer Universiade and work at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia.

A visitation will be held on May 2, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Atrium at Lazaridis Hall on Wilfrid Laurier University's Waterloo campus.
