WATERLOO, Ont. - Golden Hawks Mackenzie Botosan, and co-recipients Kibo Mulima and Wyatt Small are the Laurier Athletes of the Week, presented by The Hawk Shop.
Botosan, a first-year business major from Mississauga, Ont., helped lead the Golden Hawks cheerleading team to their second straight PCA Cheer Canada Collegiate National championship.
Head coach Carli Thomas praised the rookie, saying, "Ahe has been a consistently positive force as we've prepared for Nationals. This weekend, she played a key role in our team's success."
After Run 1, where the Premier team received a 0.5-point deduction, Botosan's confidence remained and carried into Run 2.
"She was cheering on teammates, delivering strong tumbling, and executing flawless, steady stunts," Thomas said.
Her performance helped secure a zero-deduction run, leading the Premier team to another National Championship title.
Mulima, a fifth-year communication studies major from Inverary, Ont., and Small, a fifth-year business major from Toronto, Ont., led the men's curling team to their 14th OUA title and fifth in the last six seasons.
The skip and second earned their fourth gold medals as Golden Hawks over the weekend. The pair led the team to an undefeated record of 7-0, outscoring their opponents 55-18 over the seven-game tournament.
Mulima curled 85% throughout the competition with game highs of 94% vs Western and 91% vs Queen's during the pool portion of the event. He curled 86% in the championship match, and was named an OUA second team All-Star and the championship MVP.
On championship Sunday, Small curled 90% across the day's three games and had a high of 96% in the semifinal match. He also earned his third OUA All-Star award.
This was the first Laurier Athlete of the Week award for Botosan and Small, and second for Mulima.
