Golden Hawks finish round robin in second, will face Dalhousie in national semifinal

FREDERICTON, NB - The Golden Hawks earned a spot in the national semifinals after recording their fifth win at the 2024 U SPORTS/Curling Canada University Championships in Fredericton.

Laurier will face the Dalhousie Tigers for the second time in the past three games on Saturday at 8:30 am EST aiming to continue their bid for back-to-back U SPORTS gold.

Another win over the AUS champions would see the Golden Hawks face the Alberta Golden Bears or Regina Cougars in Saturday afternoon's final for the right to also represent Canada at the 2025 FISU World University Winter Games in Turin, Italy in January.

Regina conceded a 6-3 nine-end defeat to Alberta during their match-up on Friday.

Day four began with the purple and gold back on the ice less than 12 hours after defeating the host UNB Reds on Thursday night. Facing the Tigers in their sixth draw, Laurier led from start to finish in a 9-2 win, locking down a spot in the knockout round.

In their final round-robin game, Laurier were outscored 4-2 in the second half of their match-up against the Guelph Gryphons, losing just their second game of the tournament 6-5.

Despite the defeat, the Golden Hawks still finished with an impressive 5-2 record - good for second place in the final standings behind the Golden Bears at 6-1.

The Tigers also finished at 5-2, but Laurier earned the higher seeding based on the head-to-head result in their favour.

The Cougars rounded out the final four with a 5-3 record.

Live scoring of both the semifinals and finals will be available here.
