WATERLOO, Ont. - Golden Hawks cheerleader Morgan Brown and men's hockey forward Sam Rhodes are the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 15, 2023.

Brown, a fourth-year communications studies major, was a crowd favourite as the Golden Hawks won a silver medal at the 2023 University World Cup Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida. 

The Collingwood, Ont. native was key to the team's routine, executing basket tosses with great precision, performing solid cheers and stunts, and proving to be a driving force to Laurier's success over the weekend.

Rhodes, a second-year arts major, provided the heroics on Saturday night, scoring Laurier's game-winning goal in overtime against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The tally was his fifth of the season and second in the last three games.

With the Golden Hawks also defeating the #6-ranked TMU Bold last Thursday, Rhodes proved to be a force on the penalty kill - where the Golden Hawks were a perfect 4 for 4 - and had a +3 rating while averaging 24 minutes of ice time in each game.

These are the first Laurier Athlete of the Week awards for Brown and Rhodes.
