Andrew Quattrin wins MLR’s inaugural S. Marcus Calloway Community Impact Award

HALIFAX, N.S. - During halftime at the Major League Rugby Championship final game on Saturday, June 25, Toronto Arrows hooker and former Laurier Golden Hawk Andrew Quattrin was presented with the inaugural S. Marcus Calloway Community Impact Award.

"Marcus was an amazing man," said Quattrin of Calloway, who was the founder, chairman, and majority owner of Atlanta's MLR franchise, Rugby ATL. He was known for generously giving back to the Atlanta community, especially with regard to growing the game of rugby.

"It's a very humbling thing to be the first person to win it ... I'm honoured."

Quattrin spent upwards of 100 hours participating in community initiatives this year. As the Arrows' designated Community Leader, Quattrin was involved in community events either directly or by way of his teammates each week of the season.

In a statement released by the league, MLR Commissioner George Killebrew stated how "Major League Rugby is honoured to name Andrew Quattrin as the first-ever recipient of the S. Marcus Calloway Community Impact Award."

"Andrew epitomizes the leadership and legacy that Marcus Calloway stood for. Andrew's commitment to community and inspiring others is a tribute to Marcus' spirit. We're proud of Andrew and the many other worthy candidates who were considered for the award this year. Major League Rugby will continue to follow Marcus' lead in our commitment to community."

One of Quattrin's notable initiatives this season was organizing a donation drive for Optimism Place - a women's shelter in Stratford, Ontario.

Optimism Place was Quattrin's non-profit of choice to receive a $5,000 donation as part of the award.

Quattrin's involvement with Optimism Place began during his time at Laurier. Since 2016, the Laurier men's rugby team has run donation drives for the shelter every year, a tradition Quattrin has adopted with some of his Arrows teammates.

"It was such a big success and so many people were willing to help out. We'll be doing that again in the future," said Quattrin, emphasizing the role his teammates played.

"Without their help and support on any of the things we did in the community, we wouldn't have been able to make a difference - so their support was everything to me."

Quattrin also made a point to thank Selena Jones at Optimism Place and everyone who donated.

With the MLR season concluded, Quattrin is currently with the Canadian National Team, which defeated Belgium 45-0 on July 2. Team Canada will be back in action on July 10 to face Spain in Ottawa.
