UNION, Ont. - The Golden Hawks men's golf team continued its impressive start to the 2026 fall campaign on Monday, capturing the team title at the Western Men's Invitational at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club.
Laurier posted a tournament-best score of 293, finishing five strokes over par and five shots ahead of second-place Guelph (298).
Brock rounded out the top three at 301 as the Golden Hawks improved on last year's seventh-place finish and added another Western Invitational title to the program's history after previously winning the event in 2023.
The Golden Hawks were paced by Matthew Whitehead and Spencer Korol, who each carded even-par 72s to finish in a four-way tie for third place overall. The pair finished just three shots back of individual medalist Liam McKeiver of Brock, who fired a three-under 69.
Whitehead's round featured plenty of resilience. Having recorded four bogeys, the fifth-year veteran responded with four birdies to remain near the top of the leaderboard throughout the day. The performance continued his success at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club, where he tied for first at the same event in 2024.
Korol's path to a top-three finish was equally impressive. After bogeying four of five holes during a challenging stretch on the back nine, he bounced back with an eagle on the par-5 14th before adding two birdies down the stretch to climb back into contention. The fourth-year Golden Hawk finished the round with four birdies and an eagle.
Reigning OUA individual champion Dayton Price also delivered a strong performance, shooting a one-over-par 74 to finish in a tie for ninth place, while Nathan Procter carded a 75 to finish in a six-way tie for 14th. Laurier was the only team to place four golfers among the tournament's top 15 finishers.
Matthew Martel of McMaster finished second individually with a 71, while Jordan LeMoire of Western and Robbie Pemberton of Brock joined Whitehead and Korol in the tie for third at 72.
The team championship came less than 24 hours after Laurier placed second at the Brock Invitational, capping a strong back-to-back stretch that featured seven top-15 individual finishes between the two tournaments.
Laurier will next host the Laurier/Waterloo Men's Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The two-day event will be contested at Rebel Creek Golf Club and Grey Silo Golf Course.
Afterward, Laurier will travel to Cutten Fields in Guelph for the Gryphon Invitational on Monday, September 28.
