OSHAWA, Ont. - Laurier's women's lacrosse team battled two of the OUA's top programs Sunday at Vaso's Field, falling 13-5 to defending champions Trent before dropping a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime decision to Queen's.
The twin defeats move Laurier to 2-2 on the season.
Laurier opened the day against Trent, but the Excalibur showed why they remain one of the conference's elite programs, building an early lead en route to a 13-5 victory.
Tori Nascimento led the Golden Hawks offensively with a pair of goals, while Zoey Kruger and Delaney Keen added singles.
Teneike Gedge chipped in with a goal and an assist.
The Excalibur jumped out to a 5-1 first-quarter lead and carried an 8-2 advantage into halftime after goals from Keen and Nascimento in the second quarter.
Trent continued to control play in the second half, led by Maddy Baxter's three goals and a four-point effort from Abby Hiltz.
Laurier responded in the fourth quarter, scoring three times through Nascimento, Kruger and Gedge, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
In the day's second matchup, the Golden Hawks pushed Queen's to the brink before the Gaels escaped with an overtime victory.
Laurier stormed out to an impressive start, opening a 4-2 lead after the first quarter behind goals from Nascimento, Kruger and Gedge.
The Golden Hawks maintained their offensive pressure in the second quarter and entered halftime tied 7-7 after Nascimento struck twice and Gedge added another.
Queen's gained momentum in the third quarter to take a 10-9 lead into the final frame, but first-year midfielder Jace Cormier delivered a clutch equalizer midway through the fourth quarter to force overtime.
The extra period lasted just 30 seconds before Laurieve Swanson found the winner for the Gaels, handing Laurier a narrow 11-10 defeat.
Goaltender Raechel Cowan made several key stops to keep the Golden Hawks within striking distance throughout the contest.

Laurier moves to 2-2 on the season and will return to action on Sunday, September 27 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex in Guelph, where they will face the Brock Badgers at 10:15 a.m. before taking on the Western Mustangs at 3:30 p.m.
