HAMILTON, Ont. – A late comeback bid came up just short for the #9 Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday afternoon as they fell 18-16 to the #8 McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The defeat marked Laurier's third consecutive loss and spoiled an otherwise strong all-around performance against one of the OUA's undefeated teams.
Laurier opened the scoring midway through the first quarter after a McMaster special teams penalty set up the offence deep in Marauder territory.
Quarterback Will Russell completed passes to Ryan Hughes and Darius France before Tayshaun Jackson capped a four-play, 57-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Golden Hawks a 7-0 lead.
McMaster got on the board with a safety before Michael Horvat connected on a 28-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-5 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Golden Hawks extended their lead early in the second quarter when Marcus Reypa connected on an 11-yard field goal following a seven-play, 71-yard drive.
McMaster answered through the kicking game, recording a rouge and adding a pair of 40-yard field goals from Horvat to take a 12-10 lead into halftime.
Despite trailing after 30 minutes, Laurier controlled much of the game statistically. The Golden Hawks finished with 23 first downs to McMaster's 21, held a 38:40 to 21:20 advantage in time of possession and matched the Marauders nearly yard-for-yard offensively, producing 333 total yards to McMaster's 353.
Defence dominated the third quarter as neither side was able to add to the scoreboard. Laurier's front seven repeatedly disrupted McMaster quarterback Lucas Barresi, finishing with five sacks on the afternoon.
Isaiah Obiorah, Joey Edlington, Vincent Akhabue and Mitch Price all recorded sacks as the Golden Hawks kept the game within one possession entering the final quarter.
Laurier finally broke through late in the fourth quarter. After Lewc Rayner helped move the offence into McMaster territory, the Golden Hawks caught a break when a mishandled snap on a punt attempt forced the Marauders' punter to scramble for a first down. The run was stopped short, giving Laurier possession at the McMaster eight-yard line.
Two plays later, Russell found Jaxon Stebbings for an eight-yard touchdown with 2:41 remaining. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but the score put Laurier ahead 16-12.
The lead was short-lived.
Starting at their own 37-yard line, the Marauders marched 73 yards in nine plays. Barresi connected with Aidan Nemeth and Shane Wismer on several key completions before finding Nathan Denkers for a four-yard touchdown with 42 seconds remaining.
A blocked convert kept the margin at two points, but Laurier was unable to generate a final scoring opportunity before time expired.
Russell finished 25-for-38 passing for 279 yards and one touchdown, while Hughes led all receivers with 11 catches for 139 yards.
Jackson contributed 71 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries while adding four receptions for 63 yards.
Stebbings added five catches for 48 yards, including the late go-ahead touchdown.
Defensively, Kai Gagnon led Laurier with seven total tackles, while Javein Smith added six tackles and two pass breakups.
The Golden Hawks recorded seven tackles for loss and five sacks in the defeat.
The victory improved the Marauders to 3-0 on the season while the loss marked Laurier's third straight defeat, the program's first three-game skid since the 2018 season.
Now 1-3 on the year, the Golden Hawks will look to get back in the win column when they host the 1-2 York Lions, who are coming off a bye week, on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at University Stadium.

Despite being non-combatants the past three seasons, Laurier has dominated the head-to-head match-up winning seven consecutive meetings and 16 of the last 17 dating back to 2003.
