WATERLOO, Ont. - After three straight weeks of frustration, the #9-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks finally had reason to celebrate Saturday.
Behind 281 passing yards from quarterback
Will Russell and a dominant defensive performance, Laurier scored 17 fourth-quarter points to defeat the York Lions 36-13 before a Homecoming crowd of 4,750 at University Stadium. The victory snapped the Golden Hawks' three-game losing streak and improved their record to 2-3 on the season.
The Golden Hawks looked to be in control early, building leads of 10-3 and 16-5, but York refused to go away. The Lions stayed within striking distance thanks largely to a pair of safeties and trimmed the deficit to 16-13 midway through the third quarter.
Laurier's defence ensured the comeback bid would go no further.
The Golden Hawks held York to just 195 yards of total offence, including only 63 passing yards, while forcing three turnovers against quarterback Matt Linn, who was making his first start of the season for the Lions. An interception by
Owen Goetz and fumble recoveries by
Javein Smith and
Vincent Akhabue helped shift momentum firmly in Laurier's favour.
After a tightly contested three quarters, Laurier delivered the decisive blow in the fourth, scoring 17 unanswered points to turn a three-point lead into a comfortable victory.
Following a defensive stop, Russell connected with
Keyon Robinson for a 37-yard touchdown to cap an 82-yard drive and extend the lead to 25-13. The Golden Hawks struck again later in the quarter when Russell finished a six-play march with a one-yard touchdown run.
Marcus Reypa added a 22-yard field goal in the final minute to complete the scoring.
"Great game. Super proud of the guys," said Russell. "Homecoming is such a great atmosphere, great energy and it was a beautiful day. I'm really proud of the guys for pushing through and getting this win.
"We've had some adversity this season for sure, but we're back in the win column and we're looking to take this and use it as momentum for the rest of the season."
Russell finished 18-for-31 passing with one touchdown while adding 34 rushing yards and another score on the ground.
The Laurier running game was paced by
Tayshaun Jackson, who rushed 15 times for 84 yards and a 38-yard touchdown in the opening quarter. Lewc Rayner added 41 yards on four carries, highlighted by a 33-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.
Jace Atkinson led Laurier receivers with four catches for 68 yards, while Robinson finished with three receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Ryan Hughes chipped in with five catches for 54 yards.
"It's a huge win," said receiver
Jaxon Stebbings. "We haven't had the start to the season that we hoped for, so this is a huge win. It gets the momentum back on our side and gets the confidence and energy back on our side.
"We have four more games to keep this going, keep the train rolling and go into the playoffs feeling good."
Stebbings also praised Laurier's receiving corps, which helped Russell spread the ball among a deep group of playmakers.
"We have a phenomenal receiving corps. We say it every single game and every single practice. We have the best receiving corps in the nation," he said. "I trust each and every one of us to make a play when the ball's thrown to us. Guys get open, guys make plays and everyone does their job."
Defensively,
King David Dapaah led the Golden Hawks with 7.5 total tackles. Smith added five tackles and a fumble recovery, while
Oscar Wise recorded Laurier's lone sack.
"We went in there and said if we play mistake-free football, we should win this football game," said Laurier manager of football operations and head coach
Todd Galloway. "I was happy with the way the guys cleaned up some of those mistakes in the second half."
Galloway credited his defence for locking things down after halftime as York managed just two points over the final 30 minutes.
"I thought our defence really settled in and played well," he said. "Offensively, I think the big thing for us is executing and kind of finding out who our identity is as we have a whole bunch of new starters. We started to find that a little bit late in the third quarter and into the fourth."
Despite the convincing result, Galloway said there remains plenty of work ahead for a team still searching for consistency.
"Lots to clean up, lots of penalties we still got to fix and that's got to continue to be the focus," he said.
The Homecoming atmosphere also left an impression on the Laurier alum and first-year head coach.
"Everybody was excited. Full stands, full Homecoming atmosphere and it didn't disappoint at all," said Galloway. "You could hear them behind us, you could hear them in front of us the entire time and they really rallied around this game."
The win sees Laurier currently in seventh place in the OUA standings through five weeks of play.
The Golden Hawks return to action Saturday, October 3, when they head down the road for the annual Battle of Waterloo against the Waterloo Warriors (1-4).
