GUELPH, Ont. – The #7-ranked Golden Hawks suffered their first defeat of the 2026 OUA women's rugby season on Friday night, falling 99-8 to the #5 Guelph Gryphons at Varsity Field.
Guelph wasted little time establishing control, crossing for four converted tries in the opening 14 minutes to build a 28-0 advantage.
The Gryphons added a penalty try in the 19th minute before Clara Jackson touched down and Amanda Sarabura added the conversion in the 35th minute to extend the lead to 42-0.
The Golden Hawks broke through just before halftime when veteran kicker Kyra Walker converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute to get Laurier on the scoreboard. Guelph responded with a converted try later in the half, taking a 49-3 lead into the break.
The Gryphons continued to pressure out of halftime, adding two more converted tries in the opening six minutes of the second half to stretch their lead to 63-3.
Laurier's biggest highlight came in the 51st minute when Lauren Cohoon crossed the try line for the Hawks' lone one of the evening. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 63-8.
Guelph answered with six more tries over the final 25 minutes to secure the victory. Madison Donnelly and Adelaide Holmes each recorded hat tricks for the Gryphons, while Sarabura was successful on 12 conversion attempts.
Laurier (1-1) returns to University Stadium on Saturday, September 19, when the Golden Hawks host the York Lions (0-2). Kickoff is set for 12 p.m., and admission is free.
