Laurier football players of the week - week 3

Football Dan Polischuk

Hughes, Egbamuno, and Moore named Laurier football Players of the Week

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks may have fallen 20-18 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, but the purple and gold still saw several individual performances worthy of recognition. The Laurier football Players of the Week, presented by Nothers The Award Store, are Ryan Hughes on offence, Best Egbamuno on defence, and Logan Moore on special teams.

OFFENCE

Ryan Hughes - Receiver

Hughes continued his strong start to the season by earning Laurier's offensive Player of the Week honour for a second consecutive week.

The fourth-year receiver from Mississauga, Ont., recorded game and season highs with 10 receptions for 159 yards, including a 48-yard catch that stood as his longest completion of the afternoon. Hughes consistently moved the chains for the Golden Hawks and accounted for more than half of Laurier's passing production against Ottawa.

This is Hughes' fifth career Player of the Week award.

DEFENCE

Best Egbamuno - Defensive Back

Making the first OUA start of his career, Egbamuno made an immediate impact in Laurier's secondary.

The Brampton, Ont., native finished with two tackles and two pass breakups, trailing only teammate Javein Smith's three on the day. Egbamuno was a key contributor to a defensive effort that did not allow a passing touchdown and held Ottawa quarterback Josh Janssen to season lows in passing yards, completions, and completion percentage.

This is Egbamuno's first career Player of the Week award.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Logan Moore - Receiver

Moore delivered a career-best performance in the return game, setting a new personal high with 98 punt return yards on six returns.

The third-year business major from Burlington, Ont., recorded a long return of 31 yards and averaged more than 16 yards per punt return. He also added a 21-yard kickoff return.

Moore's punt return yards surpassed his previous career best of 71 yards, set against Carleton last October, the same game in which he earned his last Laurier special teams Player of the Week recognition.

This is Moore's second career Player of the Week award.

SCOUT TEAM

Laurier's scout team Players of the Week are offensive lineman Ben Lipp on offence and defensive lineman Addison May-Frizzell on defence.
