WATERLOO, Ont. - The #5-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks piled up 487 yards of offence and dominated through the air, but missed opportunities proved costly in a 20-18 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.

Will Russell threw for 367 yards on 25-of-37 passing and added a rushing touchdown as the Golden Hawks outgained Ottawa 487-378 and recorded 26 first downs to the Gee-Gees' 15. Despite those advantages, Ottawa capitalized on its biggest plays and escaped Waterloo with the two-point victory.
Marcus Reypa opened the scoring with an 18-yard field goal midway through the opening quarter before Ottawa's Zachary Copeland answered with a 40-yarder to tie the game at 3-3.
The Golden Hawks regained the lead early in the second quarter when Russell finished a 12-play, 76-yard drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Ottawa answered quickly behind running back Souleymane Camara, who broke free for a 61-yard touchdown run. The explosive play highlighted a big afternoon for Camara, who rushed for 135 yards on 13 carries and averaged 10.4 yards per attempt.
Neither team found much separation until the second half.
Copeland's 41-yard field goal put Ottawa ahead 13-10 midway through the third quarter, but Laurier responded immediately. A quick four-play, 75-yard drive ended with Lewc Rayner's 12-yard touchdown run to restore the Golden Hawks' lead at 17-13.
The Gee-Gees answered again late in the quarter, marching 75 yards on seven plays before Emyl Gregoire scored from one yard out to give Ottawa a 20-17 advantage entering the fourth.
Laurier continued moving the ball in the final quarter and appeared poised to draw even with 3:53 remaining. Reypa's 18-yard field goal attempt sailed wide, resulting in a single point that cut Ottawa's lead to 20-18.
The Golden Hawks received one final opportunity after forcing an Ottawa punt and moving the ball into Gee-Gees territory. With 1:44 remaining, Reypa lined up for a 52-yard field goal that would have given Laurier the lead, but the kick missed wide left as Ottawa held on for the victory.
Although disappointed with the result, Laurier head coach and manager of football operations
Todd Galloway pointed to his team's ability to consistently move the ball while acknowledging the need to finish drives.
"Offensively, it's a tough one," said Galloway. "Twenty-six first downs and almost 500 yards of offence, but I said none of that matters if we don't find the end zone more. So we've got to work on that and make sure that we're finishing those drives better."
Galloway was encouraged by a defensive effort that limited Ottawa's opportunities outside of Camara's long touchdown run.
"I was very impressed with our defence," he said. "Just the one unlucky explosion play on a short-yardage play, but outside of that, I thought they contained their quarterback and their pass game very well. I was really happy with how they played."
Russell spread the ball effectively throughout the afternoon, with
Ryan Hughes leading all receivers with 10 catches for 159 yards, including a game-long reception of 48 yards.
Ryan Speight added 54 yards on two catches, while
Jaxon Stebbings contributed 41 receiving yards.
The Golden Hawks also found production on the ground despite falling short on the scoreboard.
Tayshaun Jackson rushed for 48 yards on nine carries, while
Quinten Springer added 35 yards on four attempts and averaged 8.8 yards per carry.
Galloway praised both Russell and Hughes following another productive performance from the duo.
"I thought Will was a fighter and a grinder again," said Galloway. "I thought he did a great job as he learns and grows still in the starting role."
On Hughes, who recorded his third consecutive 100-yard receiving game, Galloway added, "Ryan's an incredible receiver. He's somebody that we try to move around a lot and find different ways to get him the ball so teams can't take him away. He had another great game."
Ottawa quarterback Josh Janssen completed 21 of 31 passes for 245 yards without a turnover. His favourite target was Devaughn Blackwood, who recorded seven catches for 119 yards.
Although Laurier averaged 8.0 yards per offensive play and didn't commit a turnover, penalties and missed scoring opportunities proved difficult to overcome. The Golden Hawks were flagged 11 times for 99 yards and finished one-for-four on field-goal attempts.
Despite the difficult afternoon, Galloway expressed confidence in Reypa moving forward.
"I wouldn't have put him out there if I didn't believe in him," said Galloway. "He looks great in practice, he looks great all week, and I know he's going to be that guy that makes those kicks for us. Hopefully this is just a learning moment for him."
The loss drops Laurier to 1-2 and gives the Golden Hawks consecutive losses for the first time since 2021.
Ottawa improves to 3-0 and remains tied with McMaster atop the OUA standings.
