GOHL scoring champion, MVP Sam Tonelli commits to Golden Hawks

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks men's hockey program has added one of junior hockey's most consistent offensive performers, announcing the commitment of forward Sam Tonelli.

The 20-year-old from Port Colborne, Ont., comes off a standout season with the Fort Erie Meteors. He led the Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL) in scoring, tallying 88 points in 50 regular season games. He added 18 points in 11 playoff contests as the Meteors reached the Sutherland Cup semifinal, where they lost in seven games.

Tonelli's offensive production capped back-to-back 30-goal campaigns. He earned the Terry Crisp Trophy as the league's scoring champion and the Russell Masterson Memorial Award as the Eastern Conference's most valuable player. He was also named an Eastern Conference all-star. During the season, he recorded 23 multi-point games.

This all came a year after he led the team to a Golden Horseshoe Conference championship.

Laurier's manager of men's hockey operations and head coach Kevin Forrest said Tonelli's well-rounded game made him an appealing addition.

"It's great to add another player down the middle with skill, speed, and a responsible 200-foot game," Forrest said. "He's a player with excellent vision and ability to anticipate, make good reads, and some high-skilled plays.

"His consistency over the last couple of years of his junior career is something we hope can translate to the next level once he gets a feel for the league and the pace of play. He's a committed player with a recent junior championship on his resume.

"It's nice to add a player who's not just been on a championship run like that, but one who played a major role in it for his team."

Listed at five-foot-10 and 160 pounds, Tonelli has developed a reputation as a dependable two-way forward who can be deployed in all situations. His ability to contribute offensively while maintaining a defensively responsible game is expected to complement Laurier's lineup.

Tonelli said the decision to join the Golden Hawks was shaped by the environment he encountered during the recruitment process.

"Upon many of the reasons that Laurier felt right for me, the one that outweighed most others was how welcoming the staff and players were in every interaction," he said. "It made me feel a part of something I wasn't yet."

He added that his focus will be on bringing a complete effort each night.

"What Golden Hawk fans can expect from me in the lineup is a fast, two-way forward whose game-sense goes hand-in-hand with his ability," Tonelli said. "More importantly, a player who cares more about winning than anything else and will look to set an example that with my play and attitude."
