Laurier men's hockey add physical defenceman Colin Maund to blue line

WATERLOO, Ont. - Defenceman Colin Maund has committed to the Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey program, adding a physical, shutdown presence to the program's blue line ahead of the upcoming season.

The 20 year-old Mississauga, Ont., product joins Laurier after a four-year career in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), most recently with the Newmarket Hurricanes.

The 6-foot-5, 205 pound left-shot defenceman led the Hurricanes with 90 penalty minutes in just 29 regular-season games last season, continuing a physically assertive style that defined his junior career.

Over 103 OJHL regular season games with the Hurricanes, Georgetown Raiders and Toronto Jr. Canadiens, Maund recorded 39 points and 210 penalty minutes.

Laurier men's hockey manager of operations and head coach Kevin Forrest said Maund brings an important blend of size, mobility and defensive reliability to the Golden Hawks' roster.

"Colin is a big, very mobile defenceman who addresses a need for some size and physicality on the back end for us," Forrest said.

"He plays under control, with composure in all situations, excelling in junior in a mainly shut-down role up against opposition top lines and power-play units.

"We've added a really strong defensive player in Colin, but in watching his games, we also feel there may be more offence to his game that we'll continue to develop and grow during his time here."

Maund said Laurier's competitive program and track record of player development helped make the decision an easy one.

"Laurier's competitive program and track record of moving players on to the next level made the decision to commit easy," Maund said. "I have also heard great things about the coaching staff.

"As a player I play a strong physical defensive style game. I can adapt quickly to different game plans. I take pride in my team and play as a leader. I'm looking forward to playing for The Golden Hawks and taking my game to the next level with their program."
