Laurier athletics mourns the passing of former men’s basketball head coach Chris Coulthard

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Laurier athletics and recreation community is mourning the loss of former men's basketball student-athlete and head coach Chris Coulthard (BA '71), who passed away on March 5 at the age of 76.

Coulthard is lovingly remembered by his wife and high school sweetheart, Pamela (Snively) Coulthard, his children Casey Coulthard, Brett (Joanna) Coulthard, Scott Coulthard, and Amy Coulthard, and his grandchildren Luke and Tyson Coulthard.

He is also survived by siblings Carol Dodsley, Bruce Coulthard, Betty Roe (John), and David Coulthard (Terry), along with many extended family members, nieces, and nephews.

A proud member of the Laurier Golden Hawks family for decades, Coulthard left a legacy with the program both on the court and sidelines.

Coulthard first wore the purple and gold as a student-athlete from 1968 to 1971, playing under head coaches Howard Lockhart and Don Smith.

During his three seasons with the Golden Hawks, Laurier captured back-to-back OIAA championships and reached the national stage, earning a silver medal at the 1968-69 CIAU championship before advancing to the CIAU semifinals in 1970-71.

A standout leader and competitor, Coulthard was named the team's Most Valuable Player in 1970 and served as team captain in both 1970 and 1971.

He was recognized as a conference all-star in each of those seasons and capped his collegiate career by earning CIAU All-Canadian honours in 1971.

Following his time at Laurier, Coulthard finished his playing career with the Windsor Lancers.

Coulthard later returned to Laurier to begin his coaching career, joining the Golden Hawks men's basketball program as an assistant coach under Smith for the 1978-79 season.

In 1981, he was named the sixth head coach in program history, a role he held for eight seasons through the conclusion of the 1988-89 campaign.

Over that span, Coulthard led the Golden Hawks in 97 regular season games while mentoring the next generation of Laurier student-athletes.

During that span, he was also inducted into the Laurier Golden Hawks Hall of Fame in 1986.

"Chris Coulthard's legacy at Wilfrid Laurier University is woven into the very fabric of Golden Hawks basketball," said Ryan Lannan, Laurier's Associate Director, Interuniversity Sport, Recreation & Wellness. "As a student-athlete, he represented the program with pride, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

"As head coach, he carried that same passion to the sidelines, mentoring generations of players and helping shape not only better athletes, but better people.

His leadership, integrity, and love for Laurier left a lasting impact on the team, the university, and the entire basketball community. While his passing is a profound loss, the culture he built and the lives he influenced will continue to inspire the Golden Hawks family for years to come."

"My thoughts and prayers are with Coach Coulthard's family," added Cavell Johnson, Laurier's current manager of men's basketball operations and head coach. "Coach's contributions to the foundational standards of excellence in Laurier Athletics will forever be a part of the Golden Hawks' DNA."

Basketball was synonymous with the Coulthards - along with the family's connection to Laurier. His son, Brett, suited up for the Golden Hawks from 2002 to 2006, while nephews Will and Owen, also went on to become Laurier men's basketball student-athletes.

An open house celebration of life for Coulthard will be held at the Wingham Columbus Centre on Sunday, March 15, 2026, from 1-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Community Living Wingham and District, One Care Home and Community Support Services, or the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation.
