Day 2 Recap: Laurier women's curling lone unbeaten team at U SPORTS/Curling Canada University Championships

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Laurier's women's curling team is the lone unbeaten team after day two at the U SPORTS/Curling Canada University Championships in Lethbridge, after back-to-back wins over Guelph and Regina on Tuesday.

The Golden Hawks improved to 3-0 after opening the day with a 9-2 win over the Gryphons in their morning draw.

Led by skip Emma Artichuk, the rink that includes Sarah Bailey, Tori Zemmelink, Logan Shaw, and Scotia Maltman posted singles in the third and fifth through seventh ends to take a 4-2 lead.

The victory was secured with the purple and gold putting another five on the board in the eighth.

The second draw of the day against the Canada West champion Regina Cougars proved to be the biggest challenge; a defensive battle with lots of blanks despite Laurier holding the hammer in seven ends.

With the game tied 2-2 heading into the last end,  Artichuk executed a tricky double in the eighth to secure a 4-2 win.

"Our setup for that last end was great and then just a few shots here and there we got unlucky," said Artichuk after the game. "The shot I had on my last wasn't easy and wasn't pretty to look at, but we knew to ice it tight and just bring the sweepers into it.

"The sweepers swept it great and it was a perfect line call and yeah, we made the shot and it was awesome."

With a big win in their back pocket, the OUA silver-medalist Golden Hawks sit in sole possession of first place, with four teams hot on their heels at 2-1.

"It's always awesome being at the top of the leaderboard with a few more games left, so we'd love to take the momentum from this," Artichuk said. "(Regina) were a great team that we were playing, so we want to take that momentum forward into the rest of the week and finish strong."

The Golden Hawks will open day three against the winless AUS silver-medalist St. FX (0-3) at 10:30am EST before facing a more familiar opponent in the McMaster Marauders (2-1) at 6:30pm EST, in a rematch of this year's OUA Championship game.
