SUDBURY, Ont. - Laurier's women's curling team was one of three teams to finish the opening day of the OUA women's curling championship at 2-0, after victories over Guelph and Windsor on Friday.
The Laurier rink, skipped by
Emma Artichuk, includes
Sarah Bailey,Â
Victoria Zemmelink,Â
Logan Shaw, and
Rebecca Rankin.Â
With eight of the 16 participating teams at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club making Sunday's quarterfinals, the Golden Hawks carried over their strong play from the exhibition season into their opening draw.
After the game's first point was posted by the Gryphons, Laurier put four on the board over the next five ends, eventually forcing Guelph to concede a 4-3 loss in seven.
A steal of four in the fourth end of their evening draw against Windsor paced a run of 10 straight points for the purple and gold in an eventual 10-1 win over the Lancers.
Having finished last year's event in fifth place, the Golden Hawks will continue their pursuit for an 11th OUA title on Saturday during day two of the championship.
They are set to face the host Laurentian Voyageurs at 12:30 pm in a battle of undefeated teams.
Laurier will take on the Western Mustangs in their evening draw at 7:30pm to wrap-up pool play.
