WATERLOO, Ont. - Golden Hawks Hayley Szymanowski and Ryan Hughes are the Laurier Athletes of the Week, presented by The Hawk Shop.Â
Szymanowski, a fifth-year criminology major from Cambridge, Ont., led the Golden Hawks to a weekend sweep of the #8-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens. Â
The captain had a three-point weekend including two goals and an assist, both against the Gee-Gees. Her second goal was the game-winner that came in overtime to give Ottawa their first loss of the season. Â
Szymanowski is tied for the team high in goals with four, and is tied for fifth in the OUA in that category. Â
Hughes, a third-year receiver from Mississauga, Ont., led the #1 Golden Hawks to a semifinal win over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. Â
He had 161 receiving yards, a game and team high, and two touchdowns, one of which was a 53-yard catch-and-run that left his defender in the dust, and the other was on a dart to the back of the end zone. Â
Hughes has played in all nine games for the Golden Hawks thus far, and now has 690-yards and 11 touchdowns on the season. Â
This was Szymanowski's second career Laurier Athlete of the Week award, and first for Hughes.
