Golden Hawks take down #8 Gee-Gees in overtime

OTTAWA, Ont. - The Laurier Golden Hawks completed their second comeback overtime win of the season, handing the undefeated Ottawa Gee-Gees their first loss with a 3–2 victory to open their road trip in the nation's capital.

Ottawa entered the matchup 4–0 and had yet to allow a goal on home ice. The Gee-Gees ended up striking first late in the opening frame when Gillian Warren one-timed a slick feed from Sydney Lynch on the power play, briefly extending their home shutout streak.

However, the Golden Hawks would respond just under two minutes later with a power-play marker of their own. After a scramble in the goalmouth, captain Hayley Szymanowski tucked home the loose puck to tie the game at one apiece.

"We knew there were a lot of similarities between our teams prior to the game, and I talked about how this could be an opponent that would really challenge our ability to defend," said Laurier's manager of women's hockey operations and head coach Kelly Paton.

"I thought we did a pretty good job at managing pucks early and getting set below the goal line."

Ottawa regained the lead midway through the second period when Naomi Morin corralled the puck off the boards and wired a shot from the left faceoff circle, beating goaltender Kayla Renaud far side. Despite a power-play opportunity late in the frame, Laurier entered the intermission trailing 2–1.

The Golden Hawks evened things up again halfway through the third when Olivia MacMillan crashed the net and capitalized on a rebound from Gabrielle Lehoux's shot, knotting the score at two.

Neither team could find the go-ahead goal through regulation, sending the game to 3-on-3 overtime with Laurier looking to complete the comeback and secure two points.

Both goaltenders made key saves in the extra frame before Ella Jackson battled along the boards to maintain possession, she backhanded a pass to Szymanowski, who carried the puck into the slot and, while falling, lifted a forehand shot top shelf to seal the win for the purple and gold.

"In the third period, we put our feet down and tried to attack," Paton said. "We got the one, which gave us some momentum, and then Renaud made a couple of big saves for us in overtime before Szymanowski was able to get her second of the game. Overall, it was a great matchup."

Renaud turned aside 27 shots to earn her fourth win of the season.

The Golden Hawks will be back in action on Saturday night when they visit the Carleton Ravens for an evening matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
