WATERLOO, Ont. - Another Golden Hawk has caught the eye of NFL scouts.
Fourth-year defensive end Luke Brubacher has earned a rookie mini-camp invite from the New York Jets, according to his agent Fred Wienrauch.
The 6'5", 246-pound pass rusher from Listowel, Ont. will get the opportunity to compete with the team's 2024 draft class this coming weekend.
Brubacher joins former Golden Hawks Robbie Smith, Kwaku Boateng, Chris Ackie, and Shamawd Chambers on the list of Laurier players to attend an NFL mini-camp.
Smith, the Golden Hawks' Hall of Fame defensive end, was the most recent invitee, attending two NFL rookie mini-camps with the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills in 2019.
"We couldn't be prouder of and happier for Luke," said Laurier's manager of football operations and head coach Michael Faulds. "Since the day he walked on to our football program, no one has worked harder to get to where they are than Luke."
"He quickly realized that he was going to have the potential to take the sport of football a long way and he has been determined from day one to exceed all expectations."
Brubacher, a walk-on with the Golden Hawks who had never played football until the team's 2021 training camp, grew into one of the best defensive players in U SPORTS. His six sacks this past season were the third-most in the OUA, earning him second-team conference all-star honours.
In 27 career games with the purple and gold, he recorded 61 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, four pass deflections, and one forced fumble.
Brubacher will also be waiting to hear his name called during the CFL Draft scheduled for Tuesday, April 30 at 8 pm, which he enters as the 19th-ranked prospect after excelling at the CFL Combine.
There he posted the third-highest vertical leap (38") and fourth-longest broad jump (10'6"). He was the only defensive end on the leaderboard for both.
