LONDON, Ont. (February 11, 2022) – Wrapping up the OUA Swimming Championship on Saturday, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's and men's teams both finished ninth in their respective categories.
The women got the ball rolling on day one with the 4x50M freestyle relay, finishing ninth overall. Minutes later, first-year Maxeen Mullen won the first individual points of the night for the Hawks, finishing 15th in the 400IM. The Hawks were back in the pool for the 4x100M medley relay, finishing strong in ninth place.
On the second day of competition, the first points were scored, once again, by Mullen when she swam her second final of the meet, earning 16th place in the 200M breaststroke. The Golden Hawks stayed strong at the end of the night, finishing 9th in the 4x200M freestyle relay.
The third and final day of the competition started with the women's 4x50M medley relay that saw the Hawks finish in ninth place. Next up was the second member of the women's team to make an individual final, Abby Marshall, who raced the 50M breaststroke, finishing 11th overall and just missing the U SPORTS standard. Finishing off the women's events was the 4x100M freestyle relay which saw the Golden Hawks finish 8th overall after a back-and-forth race.
On the men's side, the first night began with a setback in the 4x50M freestyle relay, but the Golden Hawks didn't let this phase them as second-year Kent Goni Avila won the bronze medal and Kelton Langman finished 11th in the 100m butterfly. Shortly after, first-year William Bryer finished 12th overall in the 400m IM. Finishing off a strong first day was the men's 4x100M medley relay that saw the Hawks finish eighth overall.
The second day of competition for the Golden Hawks' men started with a bang as Langman finished 14th overall in the 50M butterfly and second-year captain Dylan Thomas finished 11th in the 200M breaststroke - just missing the U SPORTS qualifying standard.
Langman was back in the pool for the 200M butterfly, finishing 16th overall. The 50M freestyle was the last race before the relays and Goni Aila finished 4th overall.
Wrapping up the day, the 4x200m freestyle relay team raced to a fifth-place finish.
On the final day of competition, the men's team started by swimming to a ninth-place position in the 4x50M medley relay. The next final for the Hawks was the 100M freestyle, which saw Goni Avila win the bronze medal and earn a podium position for the second year in a row.
Right after was William Bryer, who raced the 200M IM, finishing 12th.
The final event of the evening was the men's 4x100M freestyle relay, which saw the Golden Hawks repeat as bronze medalists finishing the championship with a bang.
