WATERLOO, Ont. - Golden Hawks George Radic, Owen Jibb, and John Ryan are the Laurier Athletes of the Week, presented by The Hawk Shop.
Radic, a first-year business major from Burlington, Ont., raced in his first U SPORTS swimming championship this past weekend.
The rookie set a new program record in the 400m individual medley, winning the B final and placing ninth overall with a time of 4:17.53. He won the C final in the 200m individual medley to place 17th overall, touching the wall in 2:02.15.
He was also part of the 4x200m freestyle relay that set a new Laurier record with a time of 7:24.44, placing eighth. Radic went on to score 34.5 points.
Jibb, a third-year business major from Bracebridge, Ont., competed in his third national championship in Markham.
He scored 27.5 points over the three-day competition. In the 400m individual medley, he placed 16th with a time of 4:24.88. In the 1500m freestyle race, he also placed 16th and set a new program record, finishing in 15:46.42.
Jibb swam alongside Radic in the freestyle relay, contributing to the record-breaking eighth place finish.
Ryan, a second-year global studies major from Toronto, Ont., competed in his second U SPORTS championship, and posted a record-breaking time.
He scored 24.75 points for the Golden Hawks, coming 13th in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:14.74, and 18th in the 100m breaststroke, finishing in 1:01.08.
Last season's team Rookie of the Year contributed to the 4x100m medley relay's 12th place finish where the team finished in 3:43.35. He broke the record he set last year for the fastest 100m lap split time in Laurier history for the breaststroke leg of the race with a time of 1:01.18.
This was the first Laurier Athlete of the Week award for Ryan, second for Radic, and fourth for Jibb.
