Shooting woes hurt Golden Hawks in loss to Lancers

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team was back in action Wednesday night as they looked to snap a two-game losing streak with a win over the visiting Windsor Lancers. However, after a tough first quarter that saw Windsor jump out to an 11-point lead, the Hawks would never recover and eventually fell 77-55.

With three regulars out of the line-up due to injury, Laurier struggled from the field to begin the game, shooting just 28 percent in the first quarter, while Windsor was able to hit about 57 percent of their shots and 50 percent from beyond the arc. Despite that, Laurier's Miranda Campbell had an excellent quarter, scoring six of Laurier's 11 points in the frame on very efficient 3 of 5 shooting.

That trend continued for both teams in the second quarter, with each coming in under 40 percent from the field. While Laurier was able to out-rebound the Lancers, the Hawks had eight turnovers resulting in Windsor outscoring them 18-15 and growing their lead to 14 points leading into the halftime break.

The second half began with both teams playing much better offensively, as Golden Hawks rookie Brittyn Graves' eight points (on her way to a team and career-high 15 on the night) were the most of any player that saw the floor. Laurier forced eight defensive turnovers but committed seven of their own resulting in Windsor adding to their lead and taking an 18-point advantage into the fourth quarter.

Despite their best efforts, Laurier was only able to muster 12 points in the fourth as Windsor handed the Golden Hawks their third loss in a row.
