Dominant fourth quarter leads to Golden Hawks victory over TMU

WATERLOO, Ont.  - The Golden Hawks were back in action Saturday afternoon to take on Toronto Metropolitan University for Laurier's Shoot for the Cure game. After starting the game off slowly, the Golden Hawks were able to clamp down and mount a fourth-quarter comeback to win the game 70-63 and snap a three-game losing streak, which had matched a season-long.

In the first, Laurier outscored TMU by three points with Alexa Sawchuk leading the offensive charge with six points in the quarter. Miranda Campbell also did a great job facilitating by recording three assists.

The scoring slowed down in the second quarter with neither team shooting over 32 percent. Laurier did a great job on the boards though, limiting second-chance opportunities. After a fairly even game between the two teams, Laurier held on to a 31-27 lead.

In the third quarter, Laurier struggled on both sides of the ball, being outscored 23-11. TMU was able to shoot 50 percent from the field while Laurier was only able to hit 20 percent of their shots. While Laurier's ball security was good, only committing one turnover in the quarter, the Bold out-rebounded Laurier 13-8 rebounds. The Golden Hawks ended up trailing by eight points going into the final quarter.

While trailing most of the fourth quarter, Laurier bore down in the last few minutes to pull off a spectacular comeback, which was led by very efficient shooting from both Campbell and Brittyn Graves. Cassidy Hirtle also provided a calm and composed presence at the free throw line, going  6 for 6 from the stripe.

Laurier outscored TMU 28-13, dominating in all facets of the game; out-rebounding TMU 14-4, and grabbing two boards on the offensive side. While Laurier did turn the ball over seven times in the frame, they were able to clamp down and get a big win at home.

When asked about his team's resilience, Manager of Women's Basketball Operations and Head Coach Paul Falco said, "We didn't have a great start to the second half, but our ability to dig in on the defensive end and rebound the basketball helped us get back in the game. That, combined with some timely shot-making, allowed us to close it out.

"It was a great team victory where we had contributions from up and down the lineup."
