Laurier women's basketball launches 2023 Shoot for the Cure campaign

WATERLOO, Ont. - With the start of the 16th edition of the U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure campaign, Laurier's women's basketball team has announced that it will also be raising funds to support Childcan, which assists families affected by childhood cancer.

Childcan has supported families from Windsor-Essex to Kitchener-Waterloo, from the shores of Lake Erie north to Grey-Bruce and beyond since 1974. The organization raises awareness and funds to provide personalized, responsive, and compassionate programs and services to families facing the childhood cancer journey; from diagnosis, through treatment, post-treatment care, or bereavement.

Golden Hawks women's basketball assistant coach Laura Vere explained how "Childcan helps families from across Ontario, who have a child admitted to Victoria Hospital in London for pediatric cancer, navigate a truly difficult situation."

"From parking passes and food vouchers, to support programs for siblings and the child themselves, they offer financial and emotional support while helping families during treatment and beyond," Vere said.

"While we are happy to be supporting the Canadian Cancer Society and the U SPORTS campaign, we also wanted to find a way to give back locally where we can see the impact. Pediatric cancers get some of the lowest support and funding while being some of the most devastating cancers."

A portion of ticket sales and Shoot for the Cure t-shirt sales at the team's upcoming home game on Saturday, January 14 at 1pm against the TMU Bold will also support Childcan and the Canadian Cancer Society. Game time against the visiting TMU Bold is 1 pm and tickets are available for purchase now.

Since it was launched in the fall of 2007, the Shoot for the Cure campaign has raised over $1.75 million in donations to date by all 48 U SPORTS women’s basketball programs. The fundraising initiative was founded by Rod Gilpin - the long-time bench boss of the Bishop’s women’s (1993-2008) and men's (2008-Present) programs - and is currently managed nationally by UNB women's basketball head coach Jeff Speedy.
