Women's Softball splits in week 4 of Ontario University Softball

The women's softball team had another split in week four of the Ontario University Softball (OUS) league.

The Golden Hawks travelled to Brock on Friday evening to continue a home-and-home series from week three of action. Despite going up 4-0 in the top of the first, Laurier allowed Brock to chip away and eventually tie the game at four apiece. Laurier regained the lead in the top of the fourth off a single by Emma Diegel but Brock answered back in a big way, scoring six in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 12-5 win. Diegel was 3-3 at the plate with 2RBIs.

Under frigid temperatures, game two was uncharacteristically messy for both squads. The two teams would go back and forth through six innings, exchanging leads a number of times. Down 9-7 in the seventh inning, Brock took advantage of a number of Laurier errors and blew the game open for the 15-7 win. Brooke Cameron had three hits and 3RBIs in the losing effort.

Saturday saw the resurgence of the Battle of Waterloo, as the Golden Hawks looked to answer a sweep by the Warriors early in the OUS season. Laurier opened game one up with back-to-back triples from Cameron and Sophia Malo. Brooke Tweddle then singled in Malo to open an early 3-0 lead. The bats were steady in game one, adding one more in the second, fourth, and fifth innings, and eventually got the game out of reach with three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings for the 12-3 win. Malo was 4-5 with 2RBIs while Tweddle added 3RBIs of her own. Seven Golden Hawks registered a hit with Brooke Cameron throwing 5.1 innings for the win and Heather Diercks coming in for relief.

Diercks would get the ball back in game two and found herself in a pitcher's dual early on. Scoreless through four complete, the Warriors scored two off a single and back-to-back triples. Laurier would answer back with a lead off single by Cameron and single up the gut by Diegel. Laurier allowed Waterloo to gain that run back off an unearned run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning, the Laurier bats awoke and with some noise. Back-to-back singles by Serenity Mclellan and Olivia Shaddick followed by a pinch-hit walk by Brooke Lewis, Romat had her biggest hit of the season when she pounded a ball to right-centre field and cleared the bases to take the 4-3 Laurier lead. Cameron followed up with a back-to-back triple and Claire Johnson singled in the sixth run, who eventually scored for the 7-3 lead. Waterloo inched their way back to one in the seventh, but the Golden Hawks held on for the 7-6 win and sweep of the doubleheader.

Laurier will hit the road in the final week of the season, heading to Windsor on Friday night and Western on Saturday. The Golden Hawks will then play host to the OUS next weekend at Hillside Park. Follow Laurier Softball on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @ Laurier Softball.
