The Laurier women's softball team was honoured to receive the Bette Kalailieff Scholarship from the Provincial Women's Softball Association of Ontario.
The scholarship recognizes the team's commitment to academic and athletic excellence, as well as their volunteer work with the community, particularly by supporting a large local youth tournament where they provided mentorship and support to young athletes.
"Over the past year, our players and student executives have demonstrated outstanding commitment, organizational excellence, athletic success, and a deep community spirit," says
Kevin Wilson, Coordinator, Recreation Sport Programs.
Head coach
Tom Cox as well as players and team executives
Olivia Shaddick and
Madelyn Halstead recently attended the reception in Oakville to accept the award.
In addition to their roles as players, Shaddick and Halstead were responsible as executives for the budgeting, financial planning and logistics, including for the team's trip to Calgary for the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association Championship.
"On the field, our team has proven that hard work and strategic leadership pay off," Wilson adds. "This award reflects not only athletic talent but also discipline, effective coaching, strong teamwork, and leadership from both players and the executives. Our team consists of more than just athletes—they are leaders, organizers, community builders, and role models."
The scholarship reinforces the momentum and furthers the development of the team as they prepare for next season, which includes another trip to nationals after they claimed the Ontario Softball League provincial championship in October.
