Four weeks of play brings the Laurier women’s softball team league record to 10-6

The Laurier women's softball team completed weeks three and four of its 2025 campaign with a 5-3 record during the period. This brings the team's league record to 10-6 and season record to 15-7 overall.

Week three saw the Golden Hawks head to Windsor to take on the Lancers who were the 2024 Ontario University Softball bronze medalists. Laurier struck early in the first game, taking advantage of a Lancer error to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They added two runs in the second on a single by Emily Cox and a double by Amy Hughes. That would be all the runs needed as starter Cox went the distance, notching 12 strikeouts to take the 3-2 victory.

In the second game, starter Hayley Shackell was very solid, going seven innings, giving up three runs on three hits and two walks. She also drove in three runs offensively. The game was knotted at three after seven innings of regulation and remained deadlocked until the tenth inning when a pair of singles by Maddy Halstead and Cox loaded the bases, and Shackell worked a full count before taking ball four to drive in the winning run. Jules Merritt led the team offensively, collecting three hits.

Laurier returned home from Windsor for a home set against the visiting Guelph Gryphons. Game one was a high-scoring offensive affair, with both teams recording double-digit runs. A wild third inning saw Guelph strike for ten runs to be answered back immediately by eight runs from Laurier in the bottom of the frame. Hughes led the Golden Hawks offense with four hits, including a home run and a triple. Zoe Ramkalawan added three hits of her own and also drove in three runs. Ultimately, Guelph would prevail and record a 14-11 victory.

In game two, starter Emma Diegel provided a much steadier hand in the pitching circle, yielding just five hits and three runs over seven innings. A total of five Golden Hawks would hit triples in this game, including Abby Cooper, Courtney Cuillerier, Merritt, Maddy Halstead, and Olivia Faulhafer. Lauren Artt led the offensive production, driving in three runs while making several spectacular catches in centre field.

Week four was a road weekend for the Golden Hawks. They began the weekend in London, taking on the always formidable Western Mustangs. A pair of walks, coupled with a Jules Merritt double, gave Laurier an early 2-0 lead. That lead would hold until the fifth inning when a pair of hits combined with two costly Laurier errors to give Western a 5-2 lead. The Golden Hawks were unable to answer back, giving the Mustangs the victory.

In game two, it was Western moving ahead early with a run in the first and four in the second. Hughes reached base four times in the contest on three walks and a hit, accounting for both of Laurier's runs. First-year pitcher Sophia Christodoulou provided an inning and a third of scoreless relief to finish the game; however, the Laurier bats were unable to muster much offence and fell 8-2.

The road trip continued to Brock to take on the Badgers on their senior day. The visiting Golden Hawks didn't give the home squad a lot to cheer about, however, as starting pitcher Cox combined with catcher Faulhafer to complete a no-hitter. A hit batter in the third inning was the Badgers' only baserunner as Cox struck out nine and walked none en route to a 7-0 victory.

Game two was a more competitive contest as Brock and Laurier traded the lead several times. Ramkalawan drove in three runs. The game went to extra innings, and a Hughes single in the eighth inning would drive in Natalie Donnelle from third to give the Golden Hawks the sweep.

The final weekend of the regular season will see Brock and Windsor taking on Laurier at home. On Saturday, the Golden Hawks will welcome several minor ball associations to the games vs Brock for the annual Pink in the Park games in support of raising cancer awareness. On Sunday, Laurier will recognize its graduating seniors Olivia Shaddick, Emma Diegel, Hayley Shackell, and Emily Cox as they take on Windsor.

On October 9th, the squad heads west to Calgary to compete against the other 7 top teams from across the country in the Canadian Collegiate National Championship. The season concludes on October 18th and 19th at the Provincial Championships held in Innerkip.
