REGINA (March 22, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks curling teams lost their semifinal matches on Saturday night at the 2014 CIS/CCA Championships as both the men's and women's team will finish their year with CIS bronze medals.
The men, taking on former World Junior Champion Brendan Bottcher and the Alberta Golden Bears, suffered a 9-4 loss in eight ends in their semifinal while the women, facing the Carleton Ravens, lost 6-3 in their bid for a spot in the gold medal match.
With both Laurier teams facing squads they had defeated in the round robin, the purple and gold could not duplicate the success they had earlier in the week. The Hawk men jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their match but could not carry the momentum over as they gave up scores in the next six ends to drop their match. As for the women, a game-changing eighth end proved to be the difference in the game as Laurier gave up three points and could not recover.
Despite the defeats, the bronze medal finishes wrap up very strong season for both Laurier curling programs. For the men, the result is their best at the CIS Championship since they captured gold in the inaugural event back in 2007-08. As for the women, the result marks the sixth time in seven years that Laurier has captured a medal, winning four gold and two bronze over that time.
From both teams, the Hawks lose just one player and that is womens lead
Cheryl Kreviazuk of Ottawa. Kreviazuk ends her career with the Golden Hawks with three OUA Championships, two CIS Championships, a CIS bronze and twice represented Canada, once at the 2013 FISU Winter Games and also at the 2012 Kariuzawa International Curling Championships, where she won gold.
