Nicol named CIS Athlete of the Week

OTTAWA (CIS) - Wilfrid Laurier curler Hollie Nicol and UNB hockey player Lachlan MacIntosh are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport - Mitsubishi female and male athletes of the week for the period ending March 29, 2009.

This marks the final CIS athlete-of-the-week selection for the 2008-09 season.

Nicol, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Markham, Ont., skipped the Golden Hawks to a repeat performance at the CIS championship. One year after claiming the inaugural CIS title, the Hawks went 5-2 at the Royal Montreal Curling Club including a 6-4 semi-final win over Manitoba - in a rematch of the 2008 national final - and a 6-4 gold-medal victory over Saint Mary's. Nicol, whose Laurier foursome captured silver for Canada at the 2009 Winter Universiade in China, shot 88 per cent in the final against the Huskies.

MacIntosh, a third-year kinesiology student from Perth-Andover, N.B., was named tournament MVP at the University Cup championship in Thunder Bay after he led the fourth-seeded Varsity Reds to their second CIS title in three years. The five-foot-10, 195-pound forward, who led the tourney with five goals and tied for the championship lead with six points, was chosen player of the game in two of UNB's three outings after he tallied two goals and one assist in a 6-3 upset of No.1 Alberta on opening night and scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 gold-medal victory over No.3 Western on Sunday. The V-Reds also beat University Cup host Lakehead 3-1 on Saturday.

Hockey players Joe McCann of Western Ontario and Derek Ryan of Alberta were also in the running for the men's award.
