WATERLOO-
Wilfrid Laurier is proud to announce that Golden Hawk goalie Liz Knox has been named
to Hockey Canada's 2008-09 National Women's Under-22 team following a week long
selection camp at York University.
"Liz Knox
is a very athletic and technically sound goaltender. She has a knack for making
a sensational save that will pump up the team, making everyone around her
better," commented Golden Hawk Head Coach Rick Osborne. "Her experience on Canada's
Under-22 team will definitely make Laurier a better team."
Of the 40
players that attended the camp, 22 players were selected by Hockey Canada for a
three-game series against the USA's Women's Under-22 Select Team in
Pierrefonds, QC in late August. The team will then compete at the 2009 MLP Cup,
formerly the Air Canada Cup, in Ravensburg, Germany in early January.
Knox, a Stouffville native, has completed her second year playing on the
Women's Hockey team as a goaltender. She was recognized as an OUA second team
all-star this past season, as well the team Rookie of the Year in 2006-07. Knox
was also named a CIS championship tournament all-star for her efforts
throughout the national playoffs, where the Golden Hawks placed second.
Throughout her career at Laurier, Knox has posted a record of 26-3-2 in the
regular season. Last year her 0.97 goals against average
ranked third in the nation, her seven shutouts ranked second in the nation, and
her 0.945 save percentage ranked fourth in the nation.
Knox will be joining Christina Kessler of Harvard University in net. The two
are the only goaltenders currently on team Canada's roster. Also, Knox is one
of three players on the roster that are currently playing on CIS teams. The other
two players on the roster are Catherine Ward, and Ann-Sophie Bettez of McGill
University, the defending national champions.
This past
year the Golden Hawk Women's Hockey team captured their fifth consecutive OUA
Championship after posting a 23-2-2 regular season record. They then went on to
capture second place at the CIS Championships with wins over Ottawa, Alberta,
and a 2-0 loss to McGill in the championship game. The Golden Hawks had four
OUA all-stars and two CIS all-Canadians, including three CIS championship
tournament all-stars.
