Gee-Gees defeat Golden Hawks 3-2 in OT to take McCaw Cup semifinal series

WATERLOO, Ont. – In a must-win contest, the Laurier Golden Hawks came out on the wrong side of the scoresheet, falling 3-2 in overtime to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in Game 3 of the McCaw Cup semifinals on Sunday evening at RIM Park, bringing a heartbreaking end to a historic season.

After securing a crucial victory the night before to force a deciding Game 3, both teams entered the match-up knowing a trip to the McCaw Cup final and a berth at nationals were on the line.

Sarah Howell made her second straight postseason start in net, turning aside 31 shots in a valiant effort. Ottawa's Clara Genier was equally impressive across the full series, stopping north of 120 shots and surrendering just six goals over three games to cement herself as the series' defining presence.

Despite a dominant opening period from the Golden Hawks, who out-shot the GeeGees 15-6, the game remained scoreless after the first 20 minutes.

Olivia MacMillan opened the scoring midway through the second period with a power-play goal. After an initial point shot from Gabby Lehoux, MacMillan was in the right place at the backdoor, tapping it home for her first postseason goal

Ottawa answered quickly, however, as Madison Desmarais converted on a partial breakaway to restore the tie.

Laurier appeared to have regained the lead later in the period, but officials immediately ruled the net had been dislodged prior to the puck crossing the goal line, sending the teams into the second intermission still tied.

In the third period, however, the purple and gold would officially reclaim the lead. After killing off a penalty, a stretch pass from Hayley Szymanowski sent Ella Jackson up the ice, and she made no mistake, going top shelf to put the Golden Hawks back ahead.

With the lead in hand, Laurier kept pressing offensively and eventually forced Ottawa to pull Genier with 2:06 left in regulation. Howell made several crucial stops down the stretch while her defenders kept the Gee-Gees to the perimeter. The Golden Hawks even had a crack at an empty net with just over a minute to go, but the puck drifted wide of the mark.

Then, with 37 seconds on the clock, Ottawa won a clean face-off back to the point, and Gillian Warren's shot found its way past Howell, stunning the building and knotting the game at two.

Laurier came out with urgency in overtime and managed to draw a power play after Ella Humphrey deflected the puck out of play. The Golden Hawks maintained sustained pressure throughout the two-minute advantage, but Genier stood firm with a pair of timely saves to keep it level.

With under six minutes left in the extra frame, Ottawa generated a rush chance and cycled the puck to the point. Reece Mepham's shot took a tricky bounce that Howell got a piece of, but Angelique Proulx was camped at the top of the crease and buried the rebound, sending the GeeGees to their first McCaw Cup final and ending Laurier's season in gut-wrenching fashion.

Despite the painful finish, the Golden Hawks have no shortage of reasons to hold their heads high. Laurier claimed top spot in the OUA for the first time since 2012-13, captured their first postseason series win in nearly a decade, and wrapped the regular season with a 21-4-0-1 record and 60 points.

For a large group of graduating players, Sunday marked their final game in purple and gold, and while the championship they chased fell just out of reach, the standard they set and the culture they built will resonate through the program for years to come.
