Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Honours 5 & a Team

On Friday September 26, 2003, the 18th Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held at the Waterloo Inn. With 112 friends and guest, Laurier inducted five new members and the 88-89 men's hockey team to the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame.

Kevin Shonk from the men's Volleyball team was introduced by Paul Paven his former high school coach and former Men's Volleyball at WLU.

Karen Conboy from the women's Soccer team was introduced by her former coach Barry MacLean WLU Men's and Women's Soccer coach and WLU Hall of Fame member.

Tim Bisci from the men's football team was introduced by his former coach and Hall of Fame member Rich Newbrough. Roly Webster also announced a new trophy being awarded annually at the Athletic Banquet to honour Rich Newbrough. The award will be presented to the top male and female rookies of the year.

Amy Turek from the women's hockey team was introduced by her brother and former Laurier varsity hockey player. With Amy's induction into the Hall of Fame, Laurier has its first father daughter induction.

Mark McCreary from the men's hockey team was introduced by this former coach Wayne Gowing.

The 1988-89 Men's Hockey Team was also inducted in the Laurier Hall of Fame. Tony Martindale an assistant coach with this team introduced the team. Eighteen of the twenty-three players were back for the ceremony along with the coaches and support staff. Larry Rucchin a member of the 88-89 team passed away of cancer in July of 2002. In his honour the university has created the Larry Rucchin Memorial Scholarship that will be presented annually to a continuing male varsity hockey player that demonstrates leadership and dedication to his sport.
