WINDSOR - The Laurier Golden Hawks fell victim to the Windsor Lancers in an ugly 7-5 loss on Saturday afternoon. Missing injured quarterback
Ryan Pyear, the Hawks knew they were in for a battle.
The game came down to a tale of two half's. In the first half it was all Hawks, as they shut down the Lancer offense and took a 3-0 into halftime. The second half was a different story. The Hawks had trouble converting first downs, and the Lancers keyed in on their opportunities. Within the three minute warning, kicker
Ed Becker had two chances to put Windsor away, only to see one blocked and another sail just left of the upright.
When it came down to it, Lancer quarterback, Greg Valovich made all four of his completions count hitting Ryan Franklin each time, including a 43 yard bomb that led to the eventual game winning field goal.
Despite the loss, quarterback
Jamie Partington, who came in the third quarter to relieve
Chris Adams showed some promise in his first game. He completed four of eight passes, including two on one drive to fellow Saltfleet graduate,
Joel Wright that almost brought the Hawks back. Altogether Wright hauled in 5 passes over 66 yards.
The defense denied the Lancers from crossing the goal line all game, as they have now put together back to back strong defensive games.
Tony Bretney led the way with 5 tackles (3 solo) and 2 sacks, while
Tom Annett pitched in with two sacks of his own.
Your Laurier Golden Hawks are now 0-2 on the season, but look to get on the winning track with their next game at home against the Western Mustangs on Friday September 13th at 7:00 pm. The game will be televised live on TSN, so come out and cheer on the home town boys.
