About the Club
The Department of Athletics & Recreation supports the Laurier Athletic Therapy Club which is open to all students who are interested in Sports Medicine and Athletic Therapy. This club meets on a monthly basis to discuss and learn about sports injury topics. These sessions are practical in nature and topics include; learning to tape an ankle, concussion assessment and fracture care. Through the Athletic Therapy Club, there is an opportunity to become a member and attend meetings. Meeting times and dates are variable to accommodate different schedules. All volunteer opportunities provided by the Athletic Therapy Club can contribute to the community leadership activity hours as required through the
undergraduate Kinesiology program.
Athletic Therapy Clinic Placements
An additional volunteer opportunity offered through the Athletic Therapy Club is a placement in the athletic therapy clinic. This involves committing to a 2-hour time block once a week for a semester to observe and assist in clinical duties. These duties may include assisting athletes with rehabilitation exercises, preparing hot packs and ice bags and general clinic maintenance. No previous experience or certifications are required. There is an opportunity to sign up for these positions at the beginning of each semester.
Student Trainer Opportunities
Laurier Athletic Therapy provides students with an opportunity to work directly with our Interuniversity Sport Programs as a student trainer. In this role, student trainers are required to attend all practices and games for their designated team. Additionally, the student trainer will gain practical skills in acute injury management, taping and wrapping techniques and return to play protocols. This placement requires a large time commitment. It provides an opportunity to work along side a Certified Athletic Therapist and experience the daily routine of preparing athletes for practices and games. The application process for these positions varies according to each team’s requirements. First aid and CPR certification is mandatory.
Ideal candidates will display the following qualifications:
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification
- Responsible, independent, energetic, and hard-working
- Passionate about helping athletes
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting
- Demonstrate an ability to work independently and be confident in decision-making skills
