SAULT ST. MARIE, Ont. -
Andrea Chiechi's second OUA goal in the 80th minute propelled the Golden Hawks to a 1-0 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday afternoon.
After a hard-fought battle, the Golden Hawks ended their two-game road trip undefeated, picking up four of a possible six points and improving to an overall record of 2-0-1.
It was a second consecutive great showing for both Laurier's
David Carano and Algoma's Peter Rogenthiem as both keepers were able to help send the match deadlocked at zero into halftime.
A high-pressure start to the second half for Laurier resulted in a well-struck penalty kick in the 80th minute for Chiechi, who came on in the 73rd minute after Algoma's netminder received the team's third yellow card of the day.
As the match continued, both sides ramped up the physicality, with both benches receiving yellow cards and Laurier's bench receiving a red card.
Across the match, both teams would amass a total of 10 yellow cards and two reds (four yellows for Laurier and six for Algoma, with red cards being split evenly).
Laurier dominated in the shot department, recording 13 to Algoma's five.
Carano posted his second clean sheet of the season.
The Golden Hawks (2-0-1) will now face the Guelph Gryphons (1-0-1) at Ansley Alumni Field on Friday, September 11, at 8:15 pm.
