WATERLOO, Ont. - Two early goals against left Laurier unable to answer as the Golden Hawks dropped a 2-0 result against the Guelph Gryphons Friday evening at Ansley Alumni Field.
Laurier's first loss puts them at a 2-1-1 record in OUA play to start the 2026 season.

David Carano put up a stellar effort, notching five saves off of seven on-target attempts from the Gryphons.
"Obviously, it keeps me in it. I just try to anticipate the player and get a good read on the ball," said Carano, recapping his performance.

The Gryphons came out swinging, scoring two within the first 15 minutes, controlling the pace of play throughout the majority of the match.
Guelph was able to catch the Golden Hawks off guard on multiple occasions, putting up seven shots in the first half alone.
However, as the second half began, the Golden Hawks limited Guelph's offensive chances while picking up four of their own, with Laurier being awarded two late free kicks - one of which hit the post in the 89th minute - but ultimately to no avail.
"I'm glad we had the second half we did," said Laurier head coach
Mario Halapir after the game. "All I asked the players to do was compete. Second half, that's all we had to do, have a little bit of heart."
This result gives Laurier a 1-1-3 record against Guelph in their last five meetings, with October 10th 2025's 2-2 draw being the last time these two teams met.
The Golden Hawks will look to bounce back on Sunday, September 13, as they travel to Windsor's Alumni Field to take on the 1-4 Windsor Lancers. Catch the action live on OUA.tv at 3:15 pm.
