SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Rookie defender Etienne Gabriel scored the first goal of his OUA career in the 76th minute as the Laurier Golden Hawks rallied for a 1-1 draw against the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon at Superior Heights CVS Field.

The result keeps Laurier unbeaten through its opening two conference matches during their current Northern Ontario road trip.

Both sides generated chances in a scoreless first half, but goalkeepers David Carano of Laurier and Peter Rogenthien of Algoma were equal to the task, turning aside opportunities to send the match into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

The Thunderbirds broke through in the 56th minute when winger Gabriel Etienne converted directly from an inswinging corner kick to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

Laurier found its response 20 minutes later. After co-captain Arber Osdautaj delivered a corner kick into the box, the ball fell to Gabriel following a rebound, and the first-year defender made no mistake, finishing from close range to level the score at 1-1.

The physical contest saw six cautions issued, with Laurier receiving two yellow cards and Algoma four.

The Thunderbirds held a slight edge in chances, registering three shots on target compared to Laurier's one. Carano made two saves to keep the Golden Hawks within striking distance before Gabriel's late equalizer.

Saturday's result marked the fifth draw between the two programs and followed a 3-3 deadlock in their previous meeting last October.

Laurier will wrap up its weekend series against Algoma on Sunday, September 6, with kickoff scheduled for 3:15 p.m. at Superior Heights CVS Field. Catch the action live on OUA.tv
