WATERLOO Ont. - After a strong offensive performance from both teams, the Golden Hawks fall 3-1 to the Waterloo Warriors in the Battle of Waterloo Thursday evening.
The result places the Golden Hawks at 4-4-1 with three games left in the regular season.
Fourth-year forward
Adriano Colangelo put up three shots on goal on three attempts en route to Laurier's only goal of the match.
An extremely even first half for both sides as Waterloo brought the physicality, but Laurier was able to respond with clean play throughout the half.
Waterloo would open the scoring at the tail end of the first half, thanks to Elliott Dell, but Laurier would respond soon after the second half started, tying the game 1-1 in the 58th minute, after slotting it past the keeper on the far side of the goal.
The turning point came when the Warriors put up two unanswered goals to ice the game despite some close chances from Laurier's attacking core of Max Telishchuk and
Ali Ahmad, who had a combined seven shots with one on-target attempt each.
Laurier would outshoot the Warriors 13 to nine with seven on-target attempts compared to Waterloo's six. Waterloo's keeper Lorin-Alexander Lopez put up six saves to give his team the edge.
After the match, Colangelo acknowledged it was a tough loss.
"We played strong, and we just gotta take the loss and move on to the next game."
The Golden Hawks will now travel to face the Western Mustangs, with whom they are tied in the final OUA West playoff spot, at Western Alumni Stadium on Saturday, October 10 at 3:15 pm.
