WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks men's rugby squad earned its first win of the 2026 OUA season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 26-10 at CIF Field. The victory improves Laurier to 1-1 on the season.
Laurier controlled much of the contest, building an early lead and answering each Waterloo push to secure the 16-point victory.
The Golden Hawks opened the scoring when Ben Campbell crossed for a try to give Laurier a 5-0 advantage.
Later in the half,
Devonne Henry added a try and conversion as the visitors stretched their lead to 12-0.
Waterloo responded before the break, trimming the deficit to 12-5.
After halftime, Laurier continued to dictate play. A try from
Senuk Fernando, converted by Henry, restored a two-score cushion and gave the Golden Hawks a 19-5 lead.
Waterloo again cut into the deficit to make it 19-10, but Laurier delivered the final blow when
Drew McQueen touched down for a late try.
Henry added the conversion to complete the scoring and seal the 26-10 result.
Henry finished the afternoon with eight points, scoring a try and adding three conversions, while Campbell, Fernando, and McQueen each contributed tries for the Golden Hawks.
Sunday's result not only marked Laurier's first victory of the campaign, but also secured the opening win in the 2026-27 Battle of Waterloo series, the season-long rivalry competition contested between Laurier and Waterloo across varsity sports.
Laurier returns to University Stadium on Sunday, September 27, to host the McMaster Marauders (1-0-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m., and admission is free.
