WINDSOR, Ont. – Two second-half goals off corner kicks proved to be the difference as the Laurier Golden Hawks fell 4-3 to the Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon.Â
Windsor opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Olivia Corazza's corner deflected off a Laurier player and into the net for an early 1-0 lead.Â
Laurier responded in the 15th minute. Taya Johnson controlled the ball along the sideline before finding captain Ashley Greco, who moved toward the middle of the field and finished into the bottom-right corner to tie the match at 1-1.Â
The Golden Hawks captain extended her goal-scoring streak through the first five games of the season, with her total of six currently leading all of U SPORTS.
The Lancers regained the lead in the 31st minute when Delia Caruso scored from a pass from Corazza to send Windsor into halftime ahead 2-1.Â
Laurier's offence came out firing right out of the break. Greco's shot in the 50th minute was stopped by the Windsor goalkeeper, but Jessica Breda collected the rebound and scored her second of the season to level the match at 2-2.Â
Just three minutes later, Johnson sent a throw-in toward the penalty area that was headed into the net by a Windsor defender, giving Laurier its first lead of the afternoon at 3-2.Â
The match shifted again in the 68th minute when Windsor's Corazza delivered a corner into the box and Jane Pozzi headed it home to tie the game at three.Â
Goalkeeper Mya Brodrecht made back-to-back saves in the 70th minute to temporarily keep the match level, but Windsor broke through one minute later when Autumn Allen scored following another corner to restore the Lancers' lead at 4-3.Â
The Golden Hawks pushed for an equalizer in the closing minutes, creating several opportunities in stoppage time, but the Windsor defence held on to secure the 4-3 victory.Â
The loss moves Laurier to 3-2 on the season.Â
